SLDC Rebrands as Linden Oaks, Reflecting its Expanded Services and Legacy of Compassionate Care
In a significant move marking nearly seven decades of service, Speech and Language Development Center (SLDC) will officially change its name to Linden Oaks. The rebranding reflects the organization’s evolution and the breadth of services it now provides to children, adults, and families across Southern California. While the SLDC name has been central to its identity since its founding, the shift to Linden Oaks encapsulates both a commitment to honoring the legacy of its founders and an acknowledgment of the diverse, inclusive future it envisions for those it serves.
“For years, the name Speech and Language Development Center highlighted one of our key services,” said Dr. Adrienne Kessler, CEO. “However, we’ve grown into so much more than a speech clinic. Our new name, Linden Oaks, represents not only the variety of services we now offer—including education, therapy, adult day programming, and soon an intensive outpatient program (IOP) and in-home ABA services—but also our dedication to creating a nurturing, inclusive space for everyone.”
The name Linden Oaks carries deep symbolic meaning, inspired by the dual legacy of SLDC’s founders, Gladys Gleason and Dr. Aleen Agranowitz. Known affectionately as “the oak tree” and “the acorn,” they were the pillars behind SLDC’s growth. The linden tree, associated with healing and community, combined with the oak’s strength and resilience, perfectly embodies Linden Oaks’ mission: to foster growth, support, and empowerment.
The change also acknowledges feedback from students and families, many of whom have shared over the years how the old name felt stigmatizing in public settings. One poignant story that influenced the decision involved a student who requested transportation without the SLDC name, so he could feel a stronger sense of belonging with his neighborhood peers. “We realized it was time for a name that reflects the dignity, individuality, and respect we strive to provide, without using deficit-focused language” added Dr. Kessler. “The new name embraces who we are now and signals where we’re headed.”
As Linden Oaks, the organization will maintain its unwavering commitment to providing high-quality, compassionate services while expanding to address community needs. The new brand identity will gradually roll out across digital and printed materials in the coming months, with a seamless transition plan designed to keep students, families, and staff informed every step of the way.
The timing of the rebrand is significant as Linden Oaks approaches its 70th anniversary in 2025—a milestone that honors the vision of its founders while setting the stage for future growth. To ensure this process respects the organization’s history, Linden Oaks leadership has engaged with longtime supporters, staff, and board members throughout the transition.
“We’re grateful for the support we’ve received from our community and are excited for what lies ahead,” said Dr. Kessler. “The name Linden Oaks resonates deeply with our values, our mission, and our commitment to growth and inclusion. It’s more than a name; it’s the next chapter in a journey that began 69 years ago, and we are honored to continue it with our students, families, and supporters.”
