SLDC Student Expresses Himself Through Dance and Music with Straight Up Abilities

Navigating the world of extracurricular activities for children with special needs can be daunting for caretakers. You seek environments where your children can thrive, build confidence, and make meaningful connections with peers who understand and support them. However, finding such programs that are both enriching and accommodating can be challenging.

At SLDC, we recognize the importance of providing access to inclusive extracurricular activities that cater to the diverse needs and interests of all children. Through events like Walk Your Way and our accompanying community resource fair, we strive to make this process easier, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to participate and flourish in activities they love.

Read on to learn more about one unique program bringing the joys of dance to children and adults of all abilities, and how current parent Jezel Collado discovered the organization at a past event:

“Inclusive, extra-curricular activities are so important for my son, Jayden, and others like him. A lot of people forget that our children [with special needs] are just like theirs – they need hobbies and activities to enjoy.” – Jezel Collazo, current SLDC parent.

Like many parents, Jezel has struggled to find enriching and engaging activities for her son offered in an inclusive space. Luckily, last year Jezel and Jayden attended SLDC’s annual Walk Your Way event at Knott’s Berry Farm. There, they got a chance to witness an outstanding performance by local dance troop, Straight Up Abilities.

“I saw a performance by Straight Up Abilities during the Walk and was very impressed. I thought they were just the cutest thing! I wanted to see how Jayden could be a part of it.”

Since 2016, Straight Up Abilities has been providing affordable, professional dance training for children and adults with special needs in the Greater Los Angeles Area. Jezel knew she needed to learn more.

She made an introduction during the Walk Your Way resource fair, and almost a year later, Jezel cannot stop raving about how much her and Jayden have enjoyed being a part of the organization. From tap and ballet to hip-hop and pop, Jayden has had a blast learning about different types of dance and music. Jezel also believes the benefits of Jayden’s involvement in extracurriculars like Straight Up Abilities goes beyond just the activity itself.

“Not only has Jayden been able to learn more about dance and music, he has also developed better social and behavioral skills. He can coexist with others like him, he follows directions better, and he knows the importance of teamwork.”

Jezel recommends this organization to any parents looking for a fun and safe activity for their child, noting that it’s a great form of exercise, movement, and expression for individuals of all ages – no prior dance knowledge required!

“The staff and instructors are amazing! They were all professional dancers at some point and have a real heart and passion for this. I 100% recommend it to anyone that’s interested.”

With the unique challenges that come with being a parent or guardian of a child with special needs, finding helpful resources and inclusive activities can be invaluable. It’s amazing to hear how Straight Up Abilities has changed the life of an SLDC student and his parent. Thank you to Jezel and Jayden Collazo for sharing your heartwarming story!
